Engineering critical assessment (ECA)

Fracture mechanics-based engineering critical assessment in accordance with BS 7910, DNVGL-RP-F108, and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Level 3 — including strain-based ECA for pipelines subject to ground movement and seismic loading, and flaw acceptance criteria development for fabrication and in-service assessment.

TES Canada provides Engineering Critical Assessment using fracture mechanics methodologies to determine whether detected crack-like flaws are acceptable under defined operating conditions. ECA considers applied stress, residual stress, material fracture toughness, flaw geometry, orientation, and NDE sizing uncertainty — using the Failure Assessment Diagram approach to evaluate both fracture-driven and plastic collapse failure modes. ECA is applicable to pipeline girth welds, pressure equipment weld repairs, in-service cracks, and weld acceptance criteria development.
